Yes you do need a Tv card, I would suggest a digital one so you can at least watch freeview as well. Software with these cards is usually pretty poor but if you have Nero or Easy there programs will capture better (usually). The quality will only be as good as the tape sp don't expect miracles but you will be able to edit, add titles etc.
Recording off tape can take up a lot of hard drive space so once you have your final version I could convert to something like DivX which can reduce the size of a file by upto a fifth. It works a little like CD audio to MP3.
PS if you buy the card from a shop check the manufacturers website fro the latest software as the stuff in the box will almost certainly be out of date.

Absolutely. How very much depends on the format they're in now.
Video tape? Digicam?

I'll assume your videos are on video tape. You'd need a TV / capture card on the computer. The Hauppauge PVR-150 is an excellent card. I haven't had much luck with capture devices that hook up to USB ports. You simply hook your camera / vcr up to the card and record. You can edit, save DVD quality, burn to DVD, compress for e-mail, etc... using software. Can record TV shows like a VCR as well (requires cable hookup), save shows to DVD, etc...

The Hauppauge card is not effected by Macrovision.

a standard TV capture card (an analogue one will cost about 25 quid) will do the trick , you can either connect your video via co axle cable (standard aerial lead) or scart to s video, FYI though if its a commercial video (i.e a film you have bought) it has a copyright system called macrovision and will need a bit of kit to take it out (easily found on the Internet just do a search for macrovision on google) with out you just get a scrambled image

Yes, but you will need a "video capture" device. You can then transfer your VHS tapes to DVD. Make sure you have enough HDD space if you want to edit your tapes, add transitions, and add titles and/or credits. One hour of video tape will use one GB of HDD space.
