I'm from Vermont, so let me clear this up for you. Vermont does not have gay marriage so to speak. They have Civil Unions. They get all the same rights and recognition as married couples, but legislature wanted to reserve the word marriage for opposite sex marriage. Massachusetts was the first state to have true gay marriage. And let me just say this to the others who answered this question : I'm not gay. But I am open minded and have respect for all people. Also, there is separation between church and state, so "God" is not a reason to not allow Gay marriage. Please people, respect everyone for who they are.

There are a few places where gay marriage is "legal", but it is only honored in that place. So if I got married in Vermont, and then came back home to New Jersey, it would not be recognized. :( It's unfair and needs to change.
