Yes they do smell, no matter how often you clean the cage.

Whew,,glad I read the rest of the story... I hoped yours had a nose,,,smiles.
It's usually not the animal that smells it's the waste, in the form of byproducts of what they eat... I know ya get it! It's also keeping the litter clean, and the foods and water fresh.
I say beg to get one if ya have to, just for the experience of taking care of another living creature,,,and buy a clear ball that the hamster can roll around in. Mom will come to enjoy it.

Smell not a problem if you clean cage regularly ... NO cedar shavings if you can avoid it ... cedar oils too irritating for hamsters. Pine shavings a little better than cedar, but can still cause probs. Best is a paper based cage litter (like CareFresh) and it comes in colors!

It's more their cage and the substrate in it that stinks, not so much the hamster itself. If you clean the cage regularly, it won't smell like anything but cedar chips (and some people's closets actually smell that way, so I guess it's not an offensive odor.)

No, hamsters do not smell--however, you must keep their aquarium clean. Hamsters like to hoard their food, and if their aquarium isn't cleaned at least every couple of weeks, it will develop an odor from that old food that they hide.

Not if you keep their cage clean. Promise your mom that you will take care of them.

Any pet will smell if it is not properly cared for.
If you clean the cage regularly, it should be fine.
