The book "Treasure Island" was originally inspired by a drawing made by a child. Lloyd Osbourne, who was Robert Louis Stevenson's stepson, was entertaining himself during a rainy day by drawing a map of a pretend island. His father came in and began to help him elaborate on the island, giving names to landmarks and telling stories about things that occurred and were hidden on this pretend island. Young Lloyd was immensely entertained, and a few days later Mr Stevenson began work on what was to become the novel.

When writing the work, however, he recieved a lot of advice and suggestions from his friends and family about elements that should or should not be present. So I suppose you might say that in a way the novel represents the collective impressions of pirates and such (at least in fiction) of the time. There is no substantial evidence of REAL 'Treasure Island', however. (By the way, in the book, the island was called 'Skeleton Island')

Hope that helps! Read the book - it's quite entertaining (and available for free because it's in the public domain now - there's a link below if you want it)!
