Fender and Gibson are long time rivals, They innovated the electric guitar and are both pionneers, Gibson makes an excellent acoustic where fender is not really into that, Although todays market Gibson is building guitars of poor quality/workmanship, If you are a begginning player and you like the Gibson feel and look I would suggest picking up an Epiphone (this is also a Gibson owned guitar builder) they are equally as nice, alot cheaper, play excellent and well worth the money, Fender is comming out with some new stuff and they pretty much keep to the nuts and bolts of gutair building. I suggest you go to www.musiciansfriend.com check out the pricing and compare the two, I believe the have a tech. shop on line and other musicians to help. Either way I own a few of each and enjoy both equally, I have played for about 30 years and have had a variety of each. It really depends on what you like, they both have very different tone qulities and they both feel and play very differently. as far as Austin I am not overly knowledgeable but I believe they build a fine acoustic guitar as well. Good luck and keep on JAMMIN !!!!

Depends on your needs. Go to a Guitar Center near you. Sit down and play a few of each brand. Ask the sales people for their input as well. You might even like an offshoot of the more expensive guitars to start with and build up to the top later too?
