I don't think you can determine that by species alone. Just like people, animals have their own personalities.

Companionship - This depends on what you want, as well as the animal. I've had both dogs and cats that are constantly attatched to me, as well as others that come only when called or when THEY want attention.

Cuddles - This depends on how much body you want to cuddle. IF you are looking for a huge beast that takes up half the couch, obviously you want a dog. For a smaller bundle of cuddle, I've found cats to be more cuddly than many small dogs.

Obedience - Most people will say "dog" here. These are people that have never bothered to try and train a cat. Many of the same techniques that work on dogs also work on cats. My cats all come when called, sit, lay down, fetch, dance and sing. Each of them also has a special trick that only they do. For example, Buddy can jump extremely high and likes to jump to places on command. We have a 7 foot stand he jumps to when working Publically. Punkin walks a highwire, Max does backflips. Gracie is our champion singer. She matches tones and can do a fair rendition of Twinkle Twinkle little star. Smokey is our leaper. She makes leaps of up to 15 feet from stand to stand. The newest cat in training is Peek-a-boo. She is doing VERY well in the catch event. She is VERY fast and snags things out of the air. Her height needs improvement, but she's young, so she will get better.

Unconditional Love - Any animal can give this. Any animal but humans that is. When I come home the outdoor ferals are waiting for me and none will eat until they have had their bit of attention. When I get inside the now jealous show cats are VERY demanding of their luvin time too.

Species does not decide affection. How YOU treat them and the love you give them is usually what decides that.

I think it depends on the particular animal. Some cats won't leave you alone until you pet and love them and some are independent and won't be bothered with a lot of attention or giving attention. Some dogs are more independent and are happy with a quick pat on the head and some think they are lap dogs meant to be petted and loved on a continues basis. They all have different personalities and people as friends so it is a matter of their up bringing and both (human and animals) temperament.

I see more affection from my staff in a day than i ever did in twelve years and two cats. Dogs are loyal, loving, caring and understanding depending on your breed and the family relaionship it has. Cats ain't bad don't get me wrong, but they only seem to want food warmth and shelter as they need it then they're fast asleep

I've met very affectionate animals from both species, so I'd have to say it depends on the individual animal. I have a dog, so I know more about them, and can kinda "read" my dogs facial expressions and feelings! I know he loves me!

Cats, while dogs are affectionate as well. Cats tend to trick their owners into believing they are non chalant animals who cannot be trained. However, they love affection and attention, to cuddle and can be trained to wave as well as other cool things. I love kitties!

I'd say dogs in general, although my best friend's cat is super-affectionate. (My cat tolerates the presence of the lesser organisms known as humans long enough to feed him.)

I've had both cat's and dogs over the years, and to be honest i still think it's dogs, my cat was a big meanie though, so there may be a flaw to my logic...
