An expression represents a number, while an equation represents a fact or relationship between the expressions on either side of the equality or inequality symbol.

For example, 5X = 10 is an equation because it tells you that "5X" (an expression representing an unknown value) is equal to "10" (another expression but this time of a known value). By solving this equation for X, you can determine the value of X, becuse the relationship between X and a known value is given.

Equations don't necessarily have to have an equals sign in them -- there are also inequality relationships. 5X + 12 > 3X + 3 is also an equation stating a relationship. It is stating the fact that "5X + 12" (an expression representing an unknown value) is greater than "3X + 3" (another expression representing a different unknown value). The equation tells you what the relationship between the expressions is.
