Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and its sequel New Moon
Sarah Dessen is a great YA author. My favorite happens to be The Truth About Forever, but really any book she wrote would be a good choice.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld (Uglies; Pretties; Specials)
Joan Bauer is another great author. Hope Was Here. Squashed. Rules of the Road. Best Foot Forward. Stand Tall.
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

The first thing that came to mind is an old favorite series that they've begun reissuing - Trixie Belden. They're great stories, about a group of kids ranging in age from 13 to 16 who formed a club and solve mysteries. It's been around since the 40's, and I still pull out my copies and read them (and I'm 38).
Another classic is the Anne of Green Gables books, by L.M. Montgomery. Anne is an orphan who goes to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (sister and brother) when they decide they need help with the farm. She is imaginitive and impulsive and impossible not to fall in love with.
Madeline L'Engle is another favorite author. She wrote A Wrinkle in Time, etc., but if you don't go for the science fiction stuff, try her other series, beginning with Meet the Austins. The next book, A Ring of Endless Light, is one of my all time favorite books.
Of course I have to recommend The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, by Ann Brashares. Drama and everyday life both, through the eyes of four best friends since birth as they have their first summers apart. A real tear jerker, but in a good way. You want to know these people.

If you have out grown those, then ask your parents for suggestions.

Try Sophie Kinsella. She has done a Shopaholic series, they are
Shopaholic goes Abroad
Shopaholic and Sister
Shopaholic ties the knot.
There are more, they go in order, I have read them all and really enjoyed them. They're modern and really funny.
You should give them a go, I'm sure you'll enjoy them

If you are willing to give fantasy a try, King Fortis the Brave is perfect for a thirteen-year-old. It's full of action and humor and is a fast read.
