I thought it might be worn tires (they were); I replaced them..the whine still remains. Any suggestions as to where to look?

Differential would be a good guess

Most likely ring and pinion gear whine from the differential(rear axle)whine from the gears will occur when the gear lash is out of specification(loose) from exccessive wear or failed bearing/bearings.if the noise occurs on acceleration it is the drive side of the gears.if noisy when slowing down or braking it is the coast side of the gears.either way you will need to repair it soon. The longer it is operated in that condition-the more damage will be done to other parts of the differential. The first step is to check the lubricant level in the diff.---if it is low or leaking it could also be the root cause of the noise. Good Luck.

could be a ring and pinon gear in the differential rear end, or the transmission needs bands or fluid. You might also check for wheel bearings.

check the drive shaft u-joints for grease. if not, then the transmission may be low on fluid, or need repair.
