because it's their food source GAME MOVES and to grow food you have to stay in place from planting till harvest ( hunter gatherers ONLY moved because the food source moved - not only game but the berries and fruits ripened at different times in different locations ) best examples are the Indians of the Pacific Northwest because of the climate they NEVER moved ( most coastal people never moved and controlled the land just like a farmer )

Because the farming societies needed the land to farm on. The more land, the more farming. Hunter-gatherers went from place to place and hunted or gathered what was there. They didn't need the land.

Actually, hunter-gatherers did to a certain extent. They'd have tribal warfare if another tribe was attempting to settle too close by.

Farming societies -- it took a lot of labor to work the soil, plant a crop, and bring water and poop (fertilizer) to it. The farmers weren't about to share with lazy bums who didn't help them work the fields! So, any bandits typically got run off. The whole idea behind agriculture was to allow an increase in population, so the farmers came to outnumber their bandit (leftover hunter-gatherers) neighbors. Eventually, the bandits were pushed onto marginal land, or forced to join agricultural cultures.

Tikicat2 is right. For your crops to harvest takes time, and a lot of work. You must clear the land so that you can plant, then you have to plant the crops.
You have to watch over and then be there to pick them. If anyone could utilize the land, you would loose out on all of your hard work and most likely starve to death.

Hunters gathers follow the game and collect food stuffs where they find it (berries, nuts and such). They have no need to settle down, in fact that would work against them. The wild herds do not stay put.

Isn't it obvious?
Hunter-gatherers can find game and wild roots, fruits and vegetables everywhere where they look for them and when there are none, they move on.
Farmers are tied to the piece of land they work, because that's where they have invested in labour and maybe in (natural) fertilizer. That's also the place that needs to be protected, so that nobody steals the crops and eventually that's where they will be able to harvest their food.

Hunter-gatherers have to wander from place to place to ... hunt and gather. When you plant a crop you have to stay around and take care of it. You don't want to plant a crop and have someone else come along and reap the fruits of your labor. Hence, the need to control land.

I don't think they woke up one day and said "Hey, let's go and control the land". They probably discovered piecemeal that they could bring the food to them by planting seed or penning animals, so having more control over foodstuffs.
