It sounds like your system Restore is trapped in a twilight zone. Sometimes you can get out of that by disabling the recovery process completely if you know your game isn't trying to recover from a virus or a serious sytem error. Disabling it will allow you to reboot to your system several times and establish system stability - run software to check for spyware and viruses.

After the system becomes stable again, then re-enable system Restore. How to turn it on and off?

After you have the twilight zone of recovery taken care of. Rebooting several times and trying some of your other programs, then be sure that Sims 2 is completely uninstalled by using the Add/Remove Programs tool. Reboot again....

As to installing the Sims, you can use the support files here. I have found them very helpful because it mentions details that people often miss

If you have never gotten the game running and that's where your problems started, you may need to run this test to see if your system CAN play the game.
In the black box, pick The Sims 2 - or the version in question

Good luck. I hope you get it fixed. I hope whatever slammed your machine is gone for good too. If you still have problems, you may need to rescue your other data if you can, then reformat.

The files might be on your system still.

Try this:
Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Look for SIMS if you find it - uninstall it
Then try again

If you dont find it - Try to recover your PC again
Put in your Recovery Disk or your Windows Disk and start over
Because something didnt recover properly if it didnt work.

not sure, so here is a stab at it. Unplug from the internet and disable all anti-virus and fire walls, try to install, you may have to shut down the computer and set it to start without the firewall and anti-virus. Do not just do a "re-start". Instead for these kind of probs do a "shut down" and wait 15 seconds before re-booting.

To go back to earlier configuration try this:
Programs/accessaries/system tools/system restore. Select a date back before you had trouble.

Do a clean install of OS
