There are many versions of the King Arthur legends, including some very modern tales. One of my favorites is The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart.
One of the main reasons for the differences is that these tales were passed down orrally for centuries before they were ever written down. Some good sites for information on some of the legends are:

Le Morte d'Arthur is one of the better books written on the subject of King Arthur, and was first printed in 1485, its a bit of a read, but if you like the subject matter, I highly recommend it...if not, wikipedia has the basics of the legend
