Well, it's not terribly reliable for the simple reason that all men release a small amount of sperm before they actually ejaculate.

It's a complete myth about not being able to get pregnant the first time - you are as likely to conceive on your first go as your 1,000th!

Can you not use condoms? Apologies for my ignorance, but I didn't realise ALL methods of contraception were a no-no within the Catholic faith. If you really can't use a 'manufactured' form of contraception, I would advise buying an ovulation kit every month and avoiding sex completely during the 6 or 7 day 'window' where you are at your most fertile. Remember though, that sperm can survive in you for up to 48 hours, so even if you think you are a couple of days away from ovulation, you could still 'catch'.

I hope you find some way around this, as it's great that you have such a responsible attitude towards it.

Good luck.

You can get pregnant the first time! Make this jerks use a condom or do not do it at all! You could become infected with an STD. If you really do not want to become pregnant the only thing that 100% works is abstinence. But since you probably are still going to have sex you should talk to someone about getting on some sort of birth control. So what you should do now is wait 2 weeks and go get a pregnancy test and make sure you are not pregnant. Then make the jerk wear a condom every time you have sex, the pull out method is not effective at all. Guys know nothing about how to figure out when a woman is ovulating and if your period is irregualr you wont be able to put an exact date on it either. Good luck and lets all hope and pray you are not pregnant.

If you don't have regular periods then there is no way you can make the rhythm method work. How can you predict your body's natural rhythm if it doesn't HAVE a natural rhythm?

And it sounds like you are relying pretty heavily on him to tell you what is OK. Birth control should be the responsibility of BOTH of you if you don't want to get PG. You should also keep in mind that the rhythm method won't prevent STD's.

It's also not true that you can't get PG the first time you have sex. He either lied to you or doesn't know what he is talking about.

Make him buy some condoms if you're going to keep having sex. I know.....you said you're Catholic.....but isn't sex before marriage considered a no-no too? Use protection or don't have sex. You guys are too young to become parents.

how long has it been since you had your period?

and, you're 16? by the time I was 12, I had already had sex ed (7th grade), and knew more or less what sex was about as well as some of the myths dealing with sex... why would you trust this guy? I mean, obviously he just wanted to get something out of you...sex.

depending on how long ago your period was, you need to stop having sex with this irresponsible jerk and take a test. if it has been over 1 week and a half since you have had a period, it is safe for you to take that pregnancy test

I hope for your sake, and the rest of America, that you are NOT pregnant!!!

AND as everyone else has mentioned before this...you can get pregnant the very first time you have sex. just 'cause it is your first time means absolutely nothing

First off, you can get pregnant the first time you have sex.
Second, I'm a Catholic and I use contraception. In fact very few Catholics take the no contraception stance from Rome seriously.
Third, stop having sex. Before you have sex, you should first educate yourself and it seems to me you're really lacking in sex-ed. Go to a health centre or talk to your doctor first. Once you feel you have enough knowledge, then freedom to you. Do what ever you want, but make sure you have your eyes wide open first.

If you feel like contraception is a "sin" (again total bs from Rome), then don't have sex period!

It may be a little late for the pill dear! The only sure birth control is abstinence. There have been people get pregnant with all the other methods. I don't know what rhythm has to do with birth control but I wouldn't count on it. Sounds more like he's giving you a line if you ask me! There are several kinds of birth control. Go to your doctor and ask for his help. If it's not to late for that already!

This guy is taking the P! and remember,Mary got pregnant with no sex at all.The rythm method is unreliable even when used properly but for someone with irregular periods it's a disaster.

Roulette, honey. The rhythm method is not so accurate. You need to use REAL birth control. Get on the pill, use condoms, etc. It is irrelevant that you are Catholic. If that matters, you shouldn't even be having sex. And you can get pregnant the first time, second time, it doesn't matter.

Well, I'm going to be honest with you, and you might not like it, but here goes.
I think that you are both being very stupid. The only way to ensure you avoid pregnancy is by not sleeping with your boyfriend. You can definitely get pregnant the first time you have sex, and you are being very naive to think that you can't. I hope that you don't get an unwanted pregnancy out of this.
Please stop doing things that you aren't supposed to do, because you are going to end up pregnant if you aren't already.

You can get pregnant the first time you "Do It".
As for the rhythm method, don't rely on it. It you are going to have sex, use protection and get on some sort of birth control.
Please don't use the excuse that you are Catholic, you are having sex and you are not married to late now.
