Nobody hates America, America never did anything to anybody.
It is likely that you meant 'Why does everybody hate the United States?'
You see the United States IS NOT America, America is not a nation America is a continent with 36 nations in it. The US never named itself the name of the United States is a designation it comes from the end of the Declaration of Independence, "WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled...". The preamble to the U.S. Constitution reiterated the phrase: "We the People of the United States..." (The authors of these two documents probably used the phrase "united states" in place of a list of colonies/states because they remained uncertain at the time of drafting which colonies/states would sign off on the sentiments therein.) The geographic term "America" specifies the states' home on the American continent.
It is therefor incorrect to refer to US citizens as Americans with the intent of denoting citizenship, or the United States as America with the intent of denoting a nation. Americans have a term for US citizens, we are called United Statesians by the rest of Americans, to say American with the intent of denoting citizenship or America when we mean the United States reflects poorly on our attitude towards the 70% of Americans that are not United Statesians.
That said, many people in many parts of the world hate the US not because of it's status in the world but because of what it did to obtain it's status. The US did not become 'top dog' by playing nice, it did so by pushing anybody that got in it's way to the top. It pushed and crushed anybody and everybody that opposed it, in it's wake left many many nations that resent it. We took the entire United Statesian southwest from Mexico, we took Florida, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillipines and many other islands from Spain. We Split Colombia in two so that we could build the Panama canal in a puppet nation created by us. We bombarded Argentina so that we could have access to Antartic resources in our wake Britain took the 'Malvinas' from Argentina. We stablish the nation of Israel on Palestinian land displacing millions of Palestinians that even today are trying to get their homeland back. We support Israel in it's war of expansion against all of it's neighbors. We imposed all of the monarchies in the middle east, these monarchies are friendly to the US because they were US imposed and supported, when the people of that area have their way the leaders are very much against the US.
I could go on and on and on but you get the point, we got to be top dog by beating the heck out of anybody that got in our way. Because of that behavior many people hate us.
That is not to say that the US is a bad nation, many of the alternatives for Top Dog were in my opinion much, much worse.

They are envious of our way of life. When I was in New Zealand one woman I went with was proud as can be that she was going with a Yankee. Of course this was close to fifty years ago, but the people there were very grateful to us for saving their bacon during war 2. I found the people very friendly and was even invited into their homes. I doubt seriously that in all those years the opinions of the people in NZ has changed that much. I was in the Coast Guard at the time and we went to many of the islands in the South Pacific and the people were all friendly. In the larger cities like Sydney it was a little different, but there you are talking about a lot larger city. The people were friendly, but not like say Christ Church, NZ or Hobart, Tazmania here the people were like small town USA friendly. So I do not think that all people hate America, there are just some fanatics out there so you can not say everybody because of a few bad apples.

Are you joking??
Our international reputation has been garbage since Bush came into office!
Mainly its been the handling of the war on iraq, and the erosion our civil liberties. Over the past 5 years we have slowly traded in our rights for a false sense of security. Our actions in the middle east have created a generation of people that absolutely hate America - in the coming years we will see more terrorism, more war, and its directly caused by our arrogant president and his administration.
Not to mention the mishandling of Katrina, and the continued failed efforts and repairs and rebuilding!
Not to mention the denial of global warming when 99% of international scientist says it real, and its a problem! All we are doing is slowing down the efforts of finding a solution!
We have broken international treaties, we have broken our own laws, our own constitution....the list goes on and on!
We used to be greeted with open arms, but if you find yourself in a foreign country today you better be wearing something with a canadian leaf on it ! You will be treated like an arrogant american and will be a target for harrassment and theft. Why should others respect you when you dont respect them?? (im talking on a global scale here not personally) The world is getting fed up with America, and for good reason!

Exploitation/slave labor. We allow corporations to run free over the dreams of people all over the world. Including ourselves. This is not only our fault, but we are kind of guilty by association... many of these corporations come from the U.S. or sell to the U.S.
Not to mention that we pick and choose who to sell weapons to, start wars, bomb civilians, every now and again.
We give financially support to people who oppose democratically-elected leaders we don't like using USAid
We claim to be the best country in the world and we can't even conduct a fair election.
We are one of many countries who unite to keep other countries under their control through debt... and when they have the money to pay their debts, sometimes we don't even accept it (the IMF recently refused to allow Argentina to pay off its debt and continues to try to influence policy)
These things are hardly the fault of the citizens of the U.S., except for their lack of ability to take control of their government. However, most people realize this and hate "America" but not "Americans", you could say.

Bush has alienated us from the world. He is a war monger, who has committed crimes against innocent people including sending our own soldiers to die for lies. His foreign policy is non-existent, and when he's not insulting another country, he's embarrassing us with his constant show of ignorance. Bush represents us as U.S. citizens so people hate us.

We did NOTHING.
We work hard.
We don't put up with B/S well, as a people.
We don't necessarily like dealing in ambiguities or grey matter, we shoot from the hip and like honest brokers.
We help our friends.
We defend ourselves and aren't ashamed of it.
We do not fear the cost of justice.
We do not tolerate ignorance or complacency.
But probably why we are hated by 'everybody' is simply because we don't care what 'everybody' thinks.
It's tough to be the king...but it's GOOD to be the king (as told by Mel Brooks!).

One of many reasons is that we’ve done too much for them. (Warning to parents don’t make the same mistake with your kids.) Also we defeated the Germans in two world wars & they’ll never forgive us for that. We’ve also made some mistakes – some of them big ones.
