I think it has to be the opposite sex, and be my wife. Thats the closest friendship one could ever have, it's with their spouse, I think.
I say this because if it's the same sex, jealously always seems to happen, especially if you are farther along in your life than them. Or if you find your perfect mate, then your close friend gets jealous of the time and connection you have with your lover.
You can be regualar friends, but not best friends. It won't be as close as the friendship you have with your main squeeze.
I have to ask, how can a friend be your best friend, and your main squeeze be beneath that? Must not have much of a relationship I think. So the main squeeze has to be the best.
Unless your a lesbian, etc, then ofcouse your best friend would be the same sex, logically speaking.
I'm just saying there's a difference between a "best friend" and a "friend", and certain things do matter for one to be either of these.

That's a tough one, but qualities would include loyalty and longevity. Most of my good friends have been around a long time and we share common things such as church, family or school.
For the most part, I do believe that best friends usually need to be the same gender. There are just certain things that only a fellow man (or fellow woman) would understand. There are also certain things ta ht should only be shared between husband and wife.

I don't think it matters what sex your best friend is. A best friend is just a person you feel completely relaxed around and can trust with anything.

Doesn't matter. As long as we get along. I have guy's and gals as friends. Op[apposite site sex shouldn't play a factor in making friends.

thats not important, just like looks arent. its about how they act towards you. You want someone who is kind, trustworthy and always willing to listen when you have a problem or be there when you need a shoulder to cry on. In reurn you have to be there for them.

Doesn't matter - as long as you are both on the same page as to the level of the relationship.
