Some Rules For Survival At Work.

Never walk without a document in your hands". People with documents in their hands look like hardworking employees heading for important meetings. People with nothing in their hands look like they're heading for the cafeteria.

Use computers to look busy.

Any time you use a computer, it looks like "work" to the casual
observer. You can send and receive personal e-mail, chat and generally have a blast without doing anything remotely related to work.

Messy desk.

Top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like we're not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace. To the observer, last year's work looks the same as today's work; it's volume that counts.

Voice Mail.

Never answers your phone if you have voice mail. People don't call
you just because they want to give you something for nothing - they call because they want YOU to do work for THEM. That's no way to live. Screen all your calls through voice mail.

Build Vocabulary.

Read up on some computer magazines and pick out all the jargon and
new products. Use the phrases freely when in conversation with bosses.

Leave the office late.

Always leave the office late, especially when the boss is still around. You could read magazines and storybooks that you always wanted to read but have no time until late before leaving. Make sure you walk past the boss' room on your way out.

Creative Sighing for Effect

Sigh loudly when there are many people around, giving the impression
that you are under extreme pressure.

Treat the business you work for like it is your own. Give 110%... of course there will be those who laugh at the comment but what you put out will come back to you...if not at your current job then somewhere down the road... Being positive is an absolute bonus as well.. employers will pick up on that... no one likes a negative attitude, its grows old and makes people weary of you!

Be honest and hard working always willing to go and do extra. It worked for me and now I am the owner/boss ! aaaaaaaah life is good !! : )

Many people will tell you "work hard" or "don't make mistakes" etc but the real key is to remain on good terms with the boss. However, this alone may not be enough, because rivals may be seeking to tear you down and get rid of you. (The usual office politics) Therefore, you also need to make yourself indispensable to the business, such that the boss couldn't possible get rid of you. Finally, you need to create a coalition of allies around you within the office to ensure you have a power position, and are able to retain your position while marginalizing others (or getting them removed) when you have to.

Everything you need to know (and more) you can find in the excellent book "Alliances and Coalitions" written by Edward Levin.

Be reliable and responsible. Pitch in, be a team player, volunteer for projects or duties, get along with co-workers, show up everyday and on time and work hard, be cooperative, come up with suggestions and ideas for positive solutions for problems, be civil and polite and respectful toward everyone including your boss, finish your assigned tasks on time or early and do them very well, make your boss look good to his or her boss, don't argue, have a good attitude and behave like you want to be there, appreciate the company and it's benefits and let them know this, become an asset to the company.
