Every time you turn on and off the phone, it transmits data to the service, and tells the service where you are, etc, etc. Checks for voice and text message indicators. So, turning it on and off is like making a 20 second phone call. It draws slightly more current than standby mode. leaving the phone off will allow the battery to recover slightly, but there is no magic time. In cold weather, it could be 3 hours. When it's hot out, it could be 10 minutes.
