The Fair Housing Act requires landlords to allow tenants with disabilities to make reasonable access-related modifications to their private living space, as well as to common use spaces. (The landlord is not required to pay for the changes.)

You rented the building without the ramp! that was part of your rental agreement (Lease) It may not say so but it is. The Landlord could allow "you" to build ramp and either you foot the bill or you share but he is NOT obligated to do so. You could sign new lease that has that addition to it but for now your dead in the water. The building of a ramp should not be that big an expense so if he wont do it ask him if you can. Make sure that if do so it can removed and building can be returned to its original state otherwise you could lose your deposit later when you do move. Last thing I would suggest is check your state laws they vary from state to state and you may have more power than you realize.

Which ever state you are in, look up the "Attorney General's" office number and they can send you "Landlords & tenants rights & responsibilites" booklet. Every state will vary so I cannot give you what the law requires, but guessing, it will be your cost since your lease probably was not signed under handicap rules. You need to find out for sure.

ALL STATES HAVE DIFFERENT LAWS you can contact the human rights bureau to find out about the Americans with disability's act and what the landlords obligations are and what other rights you may also enjoy best of luck

your husband= unfortunately your responsibility
your landlord doesn't have to even let you build the ramp- he could just refuse and you would have to find another place
hope your husband gets better soon xx

No it's not right. Techincally they building should already be wheelchair accessable, if not I believe you can sue for that. Since other handicap people cannot get into the building its discrimination. Ask your doctor about it and what you should do, or maybe ask your town commitee Good Luck Hope he gets well soon.
