There may be something wrong with the box. Have you ever been able to get a signal? I was just able to use the connection from the aerial in the wall into the freeview box and didn't need the tv antennae that I had before. It doesn't sound like the aerial is your problem.

What type of aerial do you have ? If you look in the Argos catalogue there are aerials that are specifically designed for digital signal (ideal for freeview) - however you need to bear in mind - if you don't have a very strong signal on terrestrial stations anyway (meaning BBC1, 2 etc...) you chances of using a free view box successfully are reduced greatly

Firstly check your postcode to see if you can get a signal.
Even if you can get a signal it might be fairly weak. I have to use a full size aerial that I installed in the loft, running the cable through the ceiling. This may be more effort than you are willing to go to but I can't think of a better way for you to get a good freeview signal

Could be a weak signal area, could be a weak aerial, could be a faulty box... or... could be that if you ever had Sky, or NTL, they have left your aerial going through their box outside.
When these two servers cut you off, they fix the box so that it is only allowing the five channels through and because it's coded, it refuses any other digital signal access.
I got a top up freeview box and gave my non top up box to my brother... who has a good aerial and had previously had NTL, but got rid of it.
After endless calls to my mobile whilst I was in Sainsbury doing my shopping, as he needed talking through the box because it only had a screen saver on it, I finally realised why it refused to work for him. His aerial was still going through the NTL box and so, as said before, he had perfect channel reception on BB1, BB2, ITV 1, Channel 4 and Channel 5. But could get nothing else and with the box, he lost the lot!
Crafty aint they? Coding their boxes to force you to either buy a new aerial, or put a new lead from top to bottom so as to by pass their box, or, come back to their service!
Check outside and see if this applies to your aerial.
If not, you need either, a new box, as it's faulty, or a new aerial because the signal is too weak:-)

Visit www.dtg.org.uk and look for the postcode finder. This will tell you if Digital reception is available in your area.
