No, it's not good, but...(one of the few serious answers I'll give) but class rank is only a used as a predictor of success. Not always accurate. I was 303 of 306 when I graduated and I did have to go to a community college first, but I was accepted to 4 colleges and I did graduate with 1 bachelors and by next May I will have 2 more and my master's in a year or two. SATs, Class ranks and other forms of standardizing can only be applied in very general terms. Your friend should not be discouraged especially if he really knows his potential.

I failed most all my high school courses and was passed through. My first college degree was accomplished with a 2.24 GPA, my current two degrees have a GPA of 3.91. This is because I enjoy what I am studying and I am highly motivated to accomplish my goals. I hope the same for you and your friend.

Yes, it is pretty horrible, teenages are quite vulnerable and thrive to be accepted. Ranking only enables low self esteem in some and higher esteem in others, providing the ones with higher ranking to brag and hence, make those with low ranking feel bad. Ranking is a def. no-no for teens.

Your friend is in the lower 22% of the class given your numbers.

Colleges tend to give the top 10% scholarships, prefer the top 25%, but may admit the top 50% for admittance. Being in the lowest 25% is not good!

Why are you braging to your friend about your rank when he is so low? That's just rude. You should be encouraging him and trying to help him do better.

Well if you have a high rank, I'm sure you can figure out a simple percentage equation.
