Practice and getting the tips and tricks helps (talk to others, read books and magazines, etc.). For most games, it's hand-eye coordination. Some people have talent in that area, so it's better to not compare yourself to someone else. If you work at it, then you should notice an improvement. I hate to lose, so it gives me motivation.
If you enjoy playing the video games, then that's what really counts.

Watch someone that is good at the game you want to win. Then play just like he or she plays as much as you can. Copy what is good and try not to make the same mistakes the person you are watching is making. When you can beat the person you were watching, you are ready to win the game all by yourself.

Go through with a trial run on each level and try to see if there are good tricks to remember. For example, if its a racing game, take a test run through the track and remember where to drift . If its a shooter, see if there are alternate routes around the enemie's best defense. In tactical games, its all about common sense.

Well...just play them alot i guess and get better...
Also if you are playing racing games like Need for Speed Underground 2 (I have that on my GameCube) don't slow down on the turns as much as the computer-run cars do. It isn't necessary, and if you hit the wall, too bad, because it doesn't matter. That's how I win (aside from playing them alot)! Good Luck!!
