Because most people are insecure and they are looking for answers to find the purpose of their life and if they can't find it inside themselves they hope that someone else can tell it to them not realizing that the meaning of life is different to each and everyone of us.

Don't you ever wonder why you here, where you came from, and where you are going. If you know the meaning of life then you know what you need to do.

Because people want to focus their one chance here to the greatest possible purpose. People like to be told what to do, then choose whether or not to follow it, because that way we feel like we made an educated decision.
You are solely responsible for your supplying your own meaning to life.

people need to know the meaning of life so that:
~they can live it to the fullest
~they can make their life meaningful, so they know when they've accomplished everything ,when they've reached true happiness
~so they're not living a boring, repetitive life, but a happy, wise life

I think it's just something that we as humans are curious about. The whole "why are we here?" issue tends to boggle the human mind. There are so many so called explanations... like the religious belief that we are here to procreate and fill the earth which at this point... I think we've filled it pretty much to capacity. Just my opinion though.
