whatever you do don't diet, that's just a short term fix and you will gain the weight back and more

Evaluate your lifestyle what is causing you to be larger than you want to be?

Is it lack of exercise?

Are you overeating?

Do you drink too much alcohol?

Too many "treats"? etc...

To lose weight and not gain it back you will need to change your lifestyle by eating healthily, doing the right kind of exercise regularly and not over indulging in alcohol or sweets.

If you do what you've been doing, you'll get what you've been getting. In the case of an overweight person, if you eat the way you've been eating, you'll continue to gain weight.

How to take it off and keep it off? It requires a change in nutritional and exercise habits. You begin today to eat nutritionally balanced meals and to exercise at least half an hour 3 days per week. Little changes will make a difference. You likely know how to eat nutritionally balanced meals, but if by chance you do not, please consult a nutritionist.

My biggest obstacle in the battle of the bulge is sweets. It takes all the willpower I can muster to NOT every sweet I see. It does not have to be in the house; I will find something. All I can do is take one day at a time. I will never cut sweets out of my life totally; that is unreasonable and impossible for me. What I will do is severely limit the sweets I eat, and get far enjoyment out of those that I do.

I have learned to drink water when a craving attacks to keep it at bay until my willpower kicks in. Sometimes it works, other times I find a sweet and eat it, but I no longer find a bag of cookies and devour it.

Another thing that may help is to join a weight loss support group. I recommend TOPS [www.tops.org]. The cost is reasonable [$24/year plus dues of about $1/week. TOPS does not offer special foods, but encourages proper eating habits and exercise plus a lot of support.

Don't diet -- make a life-style change. Most people gain weight back because they go back to their old eating habits once the diet is over.

Eat fresh, healthy food; no sodas, pre-processed junk and fast food. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day; water flushes fat out of your system and it is good for your digestion. Eat smaller portions 4 to 6 times a day and don't eat anything 4 hours before bedtime. Exercise at least 30 minutes at a time every day or every other day. Limit your intake of alcohol.

If you do these things you will be healthy and fit.

Keeping a lot of weight off requires lifestyle changes. Fad diets and spurts of exercise won't cut it.
-Reduce meal portion sizes.
-Exercise regularly and for extended periods of time (fat doesn't begin to be burnt until you've kept your heartrate in the target zone for over 20 minutes)
-Reduce intake of processed sugar or avoid it completely.
-Build muscle through weight training. Muscle burns more calories than fat. If you increase the amount of muscle on your body, you will burn more calories even during periods of inactivity.

By doing it gradually through a good diet (healthy food, no starving or crazy crash diets) and exercise. The quicker you lose it, the more likely you are to put it back on, which is one reason the results of fad or crash diets or pills don't last forever.

try the not so new "Bob" financially deprived diet... eats a mere 15 to 20 meals a month. Fruit snacks and uncooked canned foods, such as baked beans, corn and fruit cocktail as supplements .

It won't be easy, of course, but if you make consistent, vigorous exercise a part of your life, you won't be overweight. Also, you could stop eating after, say, 5pm - this has worked for me. I would see a doctor first thougth; it may be a thyroid issue. Good Luck!
