It all depends on several factors, what you can afford, cost on each which works better for your family situation, weather you can negotiate the stairs(condos are usually several levels), and if you can stand the noise in a condo, cost of personal property taxes. They usually share walls with the units on either side. We have a house and like it better.

The fact that you have received 19 answers in about an hour indicates that this question is answered very much according to each persons personal preference, which makes this a question that is hard to answer for you.

The obvious question to ask your self is, What is important to you in your home?

Once you have outlined your answer to the above question, you will likely have found the answer to the question you posted.

There are so many different considerations that for any one person to answer the question for you is almost an impossible task, each has it's advantages and disadvantages.

One other good way for yourself to answer the question is the old Benjamin Franklin method of solving problems
It goes like this;

You take a blank sheet of paper
You write the question on the top,

What is a better home for you

A single Family Home or Condominum
you draw a line right down the middle of your sheet of paper

and underneath each option you write down as many reasons you can think of, why you should buy it.

So under single family home you might write
More Privacy

Under Condominum you might write
Less Maintenance

etc etc.

Once you have written all the reasons to buy either one of the options, it becomes very simple

Which ever option has the most reasons why you think you should buy it, is the option you want to go with.

By the way you can use this method for solving just about any problem.

Good Luck and Have Fun with it

A HOUSE! Condo's are an insurance nightmare. Supposedly the Condo assn takes care of the structure, then you have a policy to take care of the 'contents', but is is amazing how many times claims will fall into grey areas & neither wants to pay a claim.

Not to mention associaton fees and "Assessments".

Do Study out the Real Estate market for at least 6 months prior to buying a Single family home. To keep your cost down it would be so very good to put down 20% of your own money to keep your upfront cost down. You can do up to 100% or more loans but I promise you that your asking for trouble. It is much easier to resell a single family home over a Condo...

If I was old and could not take care of the chores that a house demands then I would choose a condo.
But I prefer owning my own home.

It is better to buy a house. In a condo you ae still attached to someone on either side of you, it is like living in apartment to me.

With a house you are more independent and you can add some value. I think with a condo you'll be almost stuck with its original price.

House.
With a home, you'll have better resale and appretiation. You won't have to pay HOA and will own the ground below the structure.
The only benefit to the condo that I can think of is that you won't have to worry about yardwork.

House definately. Condos are hard to sell and they don't go up in value as much.
