I just read an article in the OC Weekly regarding a student from Cal State Fullerton who beat two women who he thought were lesbians (they were not). Regardless, this crime hurts EVERYONE, including the student because he made the decision to commit such a heinous act. So I ask you, how could we prevent such acts from happening?

First of all, get rid of the concept of "hate crimes". All crimes where people are hurt or killed are perpetuated by hate. Categorizing a crime as a "hate crime" simply because the victim fell into a certain racial or ethnic group is ludicrous. Do you realize that if the Columbine shooters had survived the incident, they would have only been charged with ONE "hate crime"? Only ONE of the dozen or so murdered students would have qualified based on his race. That's complete nonsense.

Since the root cause of crimes that injure or kill others is hate, then the obvious solution is to remove hate from the human heart. You cannot do this quickly; it is something that begins when a child is born. Children must be raised properly, with love and respect toward others. They follow our examples. There is no quick-cure for crimes of this nature. It will take a complete restructuring of our culture.

I ask myself questions like this all the time.
The one and only thing I can do is behave in such a way that is loving/caring. Also I pray for the well being of all of humanity. I once read that there was this mass amount of monks and or people who went to washington and prayed for 5 days and nights out somewhere only to see that the crime rate actually dropped 25% for that month. I dunno if you believe this yet I feel we can make a huge difference if we only get focused.

Another way to prevent these types of things from happening would be to educate people to respect all others. There are many different ways to do that BUT one must put together some sort of program for the youth, early on in their lives. I hope this helps.

As long as there are stupid, idiotic, ignorant, intolerant, vile morons in this world this sort of thing will happen. Unfortunately there is no way to stop hate crimes. I would propose that they pay a portion of their salary or wages (when they get out of prison and work) to an organization that fights hate crimes, for the rest of their life.

I'm a bit hesitant on that hate crimes thing. It sounds like road rage. Hype. Political theater gets real in order to subvert the minds of the public. Never forget that. It can go to the death of others. Look at Iraq.

that's crazy. i thought guys likes lesbians.
the guy obviously had a problem. maybe he was rejected by a girl who was a lesbian and that's why he harbors so much hate. who knows. in my opinion, hate is learned, either from parents or friends. it's sad that a jerk off like him thinks he has the right to do that to someone. or that anyone has a right to alienate anyone for any reason. damn bigots. oh well, he's going to get jail time. he'll be someones biatch real soon : )

I think most hate crimes are committed by angry young men...men whose fathers abandoned them. These types of angry young men look for scapegoats, when they are really angry at the raw deal they got from their parents.

Love a little.

Honestly, don't think we can do much about it. Reduce stereotypes, I think would be one step.
