I'd say a space station might be able to be created that may last hundreds of years and be fairly self-sufficient. Water might be an issue though.
I highly doubt 6+ Billion people would fit though.

Even if the ozone layer went to zero, Earth would still be a better and easier place to live than a space station, Mars or the Moon. After all, Mars has no ozone layer. Neither does the Moon or a space station.

I support the Halo idea.
lol
But seriously, living on a space station would actually be possible reasonably soon but a more realistic approach would involve a moon base. A moon base would both provide gravity (although minimal) and a stable platform to build on.
If enough water and resources could be shipped to the moon, there could be a permenant base on it that would be a completely self contained eco-system. Solar panels could supply the energy needed and plants could both provide food and oxygen. The only problem settlers would face are resources for growth... but I recently read an article somewhere on possible asteroid mining the the future. There are apparently enough rescources in asteroids in the solar system worth $20 billion for EACH PERSON ON EARTH. Although many of these are far away, it is thought that closer asteroids could harbour enough resources (including water) to supply a space outpost for years or decades.
Maybe i'll see you blinged up on the moon some day.

We could, except we will have to make a lot of stations to house the population of even one town or city. The science fiction writers and NASA have written of making agriculture stations orbiting Earth - in which they are alot like Babylon 5 but for growing crops and food products. Known as LM stations, I believe.

The technology is not there. We need resources the likes of which most cannot imagine. The Earth is it or nothing...at least for now. A small population could be supported off the Earth for a small amount of time. Nothing permanent yet.

Good idea. But, you'd have to have one hell of a space station to do that.

More likely build stuff on the moon or mars, but wait since were from here why not build it here.
