The question is simple. So is the answer. No one really knows. There are a whole bunch of ideas about it, but no one knows for certain. When someone, smarter than me, figures it out and tells the rest of the world, I wonder if the answer will still be simple. Maybe time is not as hard to understand as we try to make it. Good luck. I personally believe that time exists for the sole purpose of mankind's convenience.

Because everything has a beginning and therefore an end, things can be recorded over how long it took for the event to occur....however, time still exists whether man is here to record it are not...early man has sensed that seasons for example happened over a span of the passing sun, moon, stars, etc, due to the rotation of the earth....man then developed mechanical devices or clocks to record the passing of events from second to second, minute to minute, hour to hour, from day to day, etc., that is celestial time, but there is also the time associated with the universe. Einstein implied that time is a dimension, that is our own time will be influenced by our velocity through space....therefore it is probably safe to say that time is a function of our universe much as other dimensions are as in length, width, and depth.....

Steve Hawking has a tough "time" pun? :-) with this one, if you need an answer on the deepest level. Probably no one will be able to say without a complete Theory of Everything, if then, and if you find it, there will be some folks in Stockholm who will be calling you, typically years in time after a major discovery. In Relativity it is one of the space-time dimensions.

The system of those sequential relations that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future; indefinite and continuous duration regarded as that in which events succeed one another. Also the Time is a funk and dance-pop ensemble formed in 1981. They are prominent protégés of Prince and arguably his most sucessful side project.

It really isn't anything except a device or tool to measure with. Time gives us a framework to work with, or points of reference with which to schedule future events, track previous events, or write present events.
