Ok first off "Bloody Mary" is the nickname given to Mary Tudor also known as Mary Queen of Scots. She gained the moniker during her reign in Scotland. She was a devout Catholic and her half sister Elizabeth Tudor (Queen Elizabeth the first) was of course not, because of her and Mary's father Henry the VIII forming the Church of England so he can divorce his wives at will. I believe Anne Bolyn was Mary's mother and of course she was beheaded. Anyways during the fight to reinstate Catholicism as Englands state religion, she gave the command that there were to be no prisoners, so any English troops (especially if they were not Catholic) would be killed if they surrenderd or were caught. The war was very bloody. Hence the name "Bloody Mary".
Now onto the mirror thing. The chant is supposed to put you into a trance and if you are keen on the history of Mary Tudor what you will supposedly see is one of two things: #1-you will see her appear in the mirror and then her head gets cut off by an axe with noone weilding it. #2-you will see her headless body holding her head and coming at you. Of all the times I did this as a kid (lets say I have grandkids now) I have never seen anything.

Bloody Mary is actually Queen Elizabeth's older half sister. She was queen of England for a couple of years. During those years, she tried to convert England back to Catholism and killed anyone who refused. She killed so many people people called her Bloody Mary. The whole mirror thing is just a myth to scare little kids.

Bloody Mary is Mary I. Eldest daughter of Henry VIII, sister of Elizabeth I. There was a lot of plotting against her, by people who preferred Elizabeth. It was mainly because they didn't want a return to Catholic rule. She was responsible for a lot of executions, hence the name. There is a cocktail name after her. The mirror theory is a load of twaddle, but if you look at her portrait, you will see a really spiteful, mean face!
Added details: Whoever gave this and a few others with the same answer the thumbs down, read some history, get educated!

Where I grew up in NJ the town I lived in was in colonial times piscataway town founded in 1666 . The gravestones in centrel Nj are very old and have survived because they were made from the local stone not of marble. They are not nice gravstones like we have today. These stones have skulls and crossbones and sayings like
"WHERE YOU ARE NOW I WAS ONCE. WHERE I AM NOW YOU WILL SOMEDAY BE"
IN this town there is cemetary that was the location of a scurmish where many british soldiers were killed. There blood seaped into the gravestone of MARY MOORE who wasBurned at the stake in the 1600's for being a witch. When you stand on her grave at midnite on All hallows eve it does get hot. Some local boys stole her stone many years ago and were killed crossing the street.
there are other tales of bloody mary form england but the legend you are refering to is from our town since before we were a country. I think the mirror thing was an offshoot of our origanal story.

Bloody mary was once a queen in england. She slaughtered many people and hence the name bloody mary.
the appearence in the mirrors is only a myth. but you could try it.
at 12 am go to the bathroom and then just sing...
"bloody mary bloody mary.. pick up the rope and you're bloody mary.." then look in the mirror and she should come up.

I've always heard that Bloody Mary was the wife of Satan as a child, according to that story where she drops the innocent baby from the ceiling and if you catch it, she'll go away but if you don't, you'll go to Hell... I've only heard this version from one of my friends, so I wonder if anyone else has heard it but me, or if my friend made it up. She probably did make it up actually, knowing her. Anyway, the real person who got the nickname Bloody Mary was Queen Mary, who was queen just before Queen Elizabeth I. I think they were step-sisters. Queen Mary had 300 people burned at the stake for heresy, and probably a lot more evil things, which is probably why they refer to her as Satan's wife. Haha. If you appreciate my help, I would appreciate being the best answer! Hint hint... =)

Mary, Queen of Scots, was nicknamed 'bloody Mary' when she was beheaded. She is rumored to have appeared in her castle as a ghost. The mirror thing is an urban legend which is passed down through the other urban legend "slumber parties." Those parties do exist, but no one sleeps, do they?

I am tired of all these dumb answers. Bloody Mary was a Nickname for a young Catholic woman named Mary I. She was Queen Elizabeth's half-sister, her mother was beheaded. She hated Elizabeth, because Elizabeth's mother was their father's favorite wife. She became a tyrant because she insisted that everyone needs to know the love of God, and become catholic. she started imprisoning people, and even killing people, if they wouldn't become Catholic. She also prosecuted protestants. She was mean and during her reign, and tried to kill Elizabeth. She died five years later with no children. As for that mirror thing, that is preposterous, and I have never heard of that! this was in the 1500's by the way! hope I helped!

Bloody Mary was a nickname for Queen Mary I of England, who was catholic and killed basically anybody who didn't convert to catholicism, therefore she was nicknamed Bloody Mary, as for the Bloody Mary urban legend, I have no idea how it originated.
