-12x + 4 = -24x + 40
-12x + 4 + 24x = -24x + 40 +24x
12x + 4 = 40
12x + 4 - 4 = 40 - 4
12x = 36
12x / 12 = 36 / 12
x = 3

-12x+4=-10x+40-14x
-12x+4=-24x+40
+24x .......+24x
12x+4=40
.......-4 ...-4
(1/12)12x=36(1/12)

you resolve this equation by first calculating every bracket:
4x (-3x) = -12x and 4x1 = 4 and so on..
the first result is: -12x +4 = -10x +40-14x
Then you sort every number with an x to one side and the numbers without to the other side of the equation (by adding the opposite of the other side)
+10x+14x-12x = -4+40
add it up: 12x = 36
divide each side of the equation by 12 so get x:
x=36:12
and therefore
x= 3
