In the 1800's there were two or three rental stables on every block in New York City and the manure was causing so much disease that when the automobile came along they were able to pretty much clean up the city. Of course the first autos were either electric or steam, but the politicians likes gasoline vehicles, because even back then they realized they could make tons of money backing special interest groups like big oil, timber, etc.

There must have been more 200 years ago because they were our main source of transport, both ridden and harness. We used them in agriculture to pull ploughs and carts. They were used in pits to pull the coal wagons, and we had cavalry. They moved goods around the country and small businessess used them to make deliveries.
