Certainly not.

He has not been elected by the people.

There should be an election by the people of the Country to elect who they wish to be PM.

If Gordon is such a fantastic Chancellor, as we are always being told by Tony, then leave him where he is to get on with it.

I have heard say that he has no experience as a PM, but the post of PM is one job which experience is only gained once in office.

Should he simply be promoted to PM then obviously some-one else will be installed as Chancellor. The country would then be in the hands of 2 inexperienced people.

With the present climate and wordly problems we all face I do not think we should go down that road.

So I repeat, leave him where he is and call an election for a new PM.

In a way, yes he could be. What is likely to happen is the Prime Minister resigns as Leader of the Labour Party but not as Prime Minister. This will allow the Labour Party to elect a new leader, and once they have done that the Prime Minister will resign as Prime Minister and the Monarch will ask the new Leader of the Labour Party to form a new government.

If Gordon Brown is elected Leader of the Labour Party there is no need for him to hold an election until 2010 although he is likley to do it sooner. The Labour Party elect their leader on an electoral college basis of Labour MPs and MEPs, grassroutes members of the Party and individual members of affiliated trade unions. It is thought that, with trade union membership, up to 1 million people would be eligible to vote. If one candidate wins a majority of the votes he or she is elected leader. If no one wins an overall majority then the candidate with the least votes is knocked out and his first choice votes are re-distributed among second choice candidates. In recnet history Labour leaders have been elected by the first round, each receiving more than 50% of the votes.

Therefore, if Gordon Brown wins the Leadership election the Labour Party will have choosen him to be Prime Minister up until he is required by law to call an election (May 2010).

i think the last thing that this country needs is gordon brown as pm, he is too secretive and appears to be a back stabber, if he becomes pm that will guarantee the downfall of the labour party and there will be more backstabbing and resignations than ever, he is really only an accountant and is responsible for all the high taxes we are having to pay, i also think that the labour government is in its death throes and its time for them to go saying that, i dont know which party would be good at running the country as they all seem to be for themselves

He won't be, Blair doesn't have the authority to select a successor.
