In World War 2, England and some other countries decided to reserve a space in Palastine for the Jewish country they had wanted, and it just so happens Jerusalem is a holy place for Christians, Muslims and Jewish. Radical Muslims say Allah tells them to kill Jewish people and homosexuals, and the conservative christians or Catholics are being sticklers about it. It's nuts. But anyways, these countries just left Isreal to fend for itself now that it had all that they wanted, and since then it's become a powder keg.
There has been a constant border war, though not really flaring up until a Palestinian terrorist group (Probably Hezbollah, but I'm not sure) kidnapped two soldiers and then Israel invaded. It's an Isreali custom not to leave anyone behind in the war, so they might free 100 live Palestinian soldiers for the remains of two comrades.
Hopefully I don't offend anyone. Not all Muslims and Christians are bad, I'm referring to suicide bombers and Pat Robinson.

Israel controls the land but refuses to give the Palestinians the right to vote (even though they're taxed by israel), or let them break off and form their own country (with a military and control of it's airspace and freedom to move within its own borders at will). The Palestinians are crushed under economic sanctions, and live in squalid refugee camps on strict food, water, and electricity rations while Israelis down the street have internet access, run sprinklers, and can vote in Israeli elections. This is a grossly unfair situation, and to add insult to injury, the Israelis tend to destroy Palestian homes with no compensation and bomb Palestinian neighborhoods if they think a terrorist lives there. So the Palestinians, since they don't really have much in the way of weapons (see crushing economic sanctions above) resort to suicide bombings and kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.

It's one of those vicious cycle things.. Why doesn't Israel give the Palestinians the right to vote? Well, that'd erase the jewish majority in the jewish democratic state, and we couldn't allow that, could we...

This conflict is very old. Palestine does not recognize Israel as a legal state and has for years been attacking in small ways. The current conflict was exacerbated into out and out war by the tunneling under the border and kidnapping by Hezbollah of Israel's soldiers who were part of a communications unit assigned to watching the border and monitoring for signals etc.

This conflict was seen by the US as a good way to get rid of Hezbollah (who are in fact an elected part of the Palestinian government.. we just don't like them) It has sort of backfired owing in large part to the Syrian allies of the Hezbollah providing them with technology and state of the art weaponry.

You will take note that Condi Rice put off going to negotiate peace for close to a month (saying of course that she was waiting for the time to be more conducive.. which in fact meant to give Israel time to decimate the Hezbollah before acting)

Israel has a right to defend their borders. Palestine has a right to elect who they want in power. The US also hoped that things would go more in favor of Israel so they could use it as a blue print for an attack by the US on Iran.

Is it really any wonder they think of us as heathens?

Just from what I gather and in short Israel is peeved by the threats coming from all directions and proclaiming death to Israel. Israel used the kidnappings as a springboard to exhibit is might in war (not good in my opinion) to all those who are giving threats. Israel ran short of missiles, and put in a large order for them from U.S. Israel then had to ease off a bit and use its air power. And after exhausting that strategy as being ineffective and killing too many civilians,a cease in hostilities was agreed upon. Still waiting for their missiles from America to arrive, a truce of sorts was made and a pullback ordered. And now I hear nothing. Israel remains waiting for the missiles. I do not want to think about the outcome of a conventional war between Israel and Iran.

Israel hopes to homicide or eject all Palestinians before the international takes action adverse to her. Palestine has no military, -- no warfare. different Arab/Muslim countries ought to have a warfare or 2 with evil little Israel yet no longer quickly. Israel will attempt to commence WW3 at the same time as nevertheless allied with the country. that's inevitable. do not believe the lies about Israel being the sufferer.

Israel lies surrounded by bloodthirsty enemies that will not settle for anything less than for Israel's death and destruction.
How do you reason with someone who's bottom line is your death?
Of course antisemites are everywhere and they wish to blame Israel every time they defend themselves from the murderers.
So the bottom line is Israel must stand up for itself (because no one else will) or die.
The poverty and squalor the Palestinians still live in are caused not by israel but by the Palestinian and Arab leaders that have allowed them to remain in camps rather than allow Israel to build housing for them. Isael tried to build housing and some WAS done before the Palestinians and Arabs put an end to it.
You see it is very simple. Allow your own people to suffer in camps and then tell them it was all Israels fault not your own. Then when the children of these camps grow up into desperate angry men they are easy to recruit as terrorists and suicide bombers.
What a cruel thing to do to your own people.
Check the history...it's True.

Land, land, and more land. But, didn't even Mohammad say this land belonged to the Israelites?

There is room for two nations here. Small nations, but good nations.
