It's because men have traditionally had the upper hand in culture, they've been the "ruling gender" for most of the world's history. And in the past 100 years or so, men have started to lose that monopoly. Women are coming into power with more frequency and strength and part of that shift of power involves degrading and chipping away at the dominant group in order to bring it down to a more balanced level with the oppressed groups/gender.

women are portrayed as being stupid ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!
Married with children
friends-pheobe and rachel
seinfield-the women jerry, kramer and george dated
cheers- woody's girlfriend
and oh so many others. It seems that on tv few woman can be pretty and smart at the same time. Men however are goodlooking and smart very often. Men who are portrayed as dumb are often unattractive as well. It sends a message to the viewers doesn't it

Well sometimes, it's true, but not always :P Women are thought to be more calm and wiser before taking any actions, while some men don't. Then again, I think both gender can be smart and stupid at the same time. Men can't read maps and won't ask for direction, and the women follow :P

Wow, I don't know what sitcoms you watch, but I think women are portrayed as being stupid as much as the men. Look at "The Old Christine", "Will & Grace", "My Wife & Kids". These women are not made to look smart.

not... look on, my friend, it may be equal, if not more shallow female scripts, depends on the show. and don't bother yourself with the littleness of that. i am in that biz. over rated and just another job. these are scripts we choose or not, for work, not reality. the character can simply be a male or a female, i promise the writters are not picking on gender, they have no need for that, it's casting for parts and accepting or not...

Pretty much show. We had Chrissy as an airhead in "Three's Company" and dig the static from that.

welcome to the world of the policaly correct.
Note that in just about every movie the Bad guy is a white straight male, if its anything else these days you have people playing racist or sexist or homophobe cards this way or that.
Its just the time we live in, hopefully it will change.
