depends on where you are going - light/pastel color polo or tee with jeans, or button down shirt with the slacks

Fashion standards and fashion no-nos have passed by the wayside. It depends more on the event than what else he's wearing. The important thing is that it looks put together. Don't wear ragged blue jeans and dirty tennies with a blazer.
The more formal the outing the more formal the rest of his attire.
The more casual, etc.
One thing he might remember is if it gets warm and he takes off the blazer (like after taking you dancing), what is underneath should look as good without the blazer as it does with it. Blazers never make the outfit, they just enhance it.

i think black pants with white shirt will be best in my view...but depends upon the person wearing and where is he heading to...
