I know , I like to watch TV in bed, but when my fella has nodded of I am constantly adjusting the volume through all the ads . I think the advertisers presume we are all going to the loo or to make a cuppa during the break and therefor give us the opportunity to here there selling techniques from the kitchen or the bathroom !

They are louder. Ads have always been a little louder than the program so that you can hear them in the kitchen, when you getting a drink or snack from the Frig. Many years ago, an ad agent noticed that people used the ad time to get drinks, food, and go to the bathroom so as not to miss the show. Since then the broadcast volume goes up when the commercials start.

Yeah I don't know about the why, but I do agree. I frickin' hate advertising today too. It makes me really disappointed in the advertising companies. Either that, or the people at these companies that are responsible for choosing the shitty ideas they put on t.v. Do they have a single clue as to what a good creative commercial should be like??? It makes me appreciate all the more the very, very few good advertisements out there. Like Geico-terrible prices on car insurance(in my opinion-but I'm also in Florida)-but great advertising-and they change it up too.

Do they get louder of is it just that the surroundings get quieter? Less traffic, less movement outside, from neighbours etc might have a lot to do with it. However, saying that, Channel 5 is terrible...Need the volume up for the films, then the adverts are deafening!

2 reasons. First, primetime television has the largest audience and advertisers need to attract attention obviously. But, another reason for the seemingly louder commercials can be due to the fact that it is generally quieter at night -- less traffic and street noise, less factory noise, people speak softer -- making night commercials louder by comparison.

Back in the 70's, I think, there was a law passed, not allowing ads to be any louder than the programs. It lasted for awhile but then they just snuck back to their old ways. Dammit! You can buy some tellies (see? I spoke "British"!) that have "smartsound", which equalizes all the sound. Those things are great!

They always increase the volume of ads, and maybe they seem even louder as there is less outside noise and activity during the evening.

Your right, thats exactly what they do and why they do it. There was a question on here a few weeks back and someone who works in advertising confessed! It really bugs me because during the week when I'm tired I often fall asleep on the sofa and the ads wake me up.

Yes, they are louder, and yes, they are shouting. They want you to hear them when you go out for your cuppa or your leak. They are screaming, "BUY ME, BUY ME, HURRY UP WITH THAT LEAK, YA GOTTA SEE WHAT I'M SELLIN' IN HERE"
