In the begining was Rover.
And Rover begat Land Rover, well the Rover car co could not get enough steel after the war for reasonable levels of car production so they looked round, found many ex army Jeeps were wearing out and decided to make a replacement using readily available aluminium for the body panels,.
This became the Land Rover. 4 wheel drive utilitarian slow.
they planned a faster version the Road Rover but by the time it ht production with a V8 engie and near 100 mph top speed it had taken the name Range Rover, with the break up of Rover the Land Rover became the Defender and the 4wd Defender, Range Rover, Discovery, and Freelander producing arm of the Company became Land Rover and moved to Ford ownership.
Normally a "Land Rover" is the jeep type vehicle with Leaf springs and selectable 2 or 4 wheel drive, Range rover the 3 or 5 door off road 5 seater Hatchback with permanent 4 wheel drive and coil springs. Defenders are essentially Range Rover mechanicals and Jeep type Land Rover styling.

And these other answerers are the ones who constantly give advise around here... Land Rover is a company that makes cars. The Range Rover is one of the cars it happens to make. Land Rover has made many cars over the years, including the Discovery, the Defender, the Range Rover, the Freelander and a whole bunch of other vehicles. The Range Rover has been around since the early '70s. It suffers no lack of off road prowess in relation to it's brothers, it is simply a different way to pull it off. Land Rovers are NOT made in Japan! Read that again, people. Land Rovers are NOT made in Japan. It is a British car company, with cars made in the United Kingdom, by British workers. It has always been this way. Ford never made one, BMW never made one, Land Rover made them all. Every now and again, they get another company that decides to buy a large stake in the company. Right now, that company is Tata Motors. Guess what? Land Rovers are NOT made in India, either. It never matters, the companies pick up Land Rover ownership for oddball reasons, and never even touch the company. The Range Rover IS a Land Rover, in the same way that an F-150 IS a Ford. Land Rovers are made in the UK in the same way that BMWs are made in Germany. This is not complicated. Land Rover is a British car company that makes British cars. Period. Japan has nothing at all to do with it, and they never had anything to do with it. How can these dolts run around saying horrible things about the company when they don't even know where the heck the things are built, or even what they actually build? Think before you speak.

Range Rovers are the big posh things for poseurs who don't really want to go off road but like to block the road outside schools
Land Rovers are smaller. There are the:
Defender - proper 4x4 for farmers and people who tow horseboxes etc
Freelander - the small one for people who want the image but can't afford the real thing
Discovery - bigger than the other land rovers with 7 seats and very practical but pricey and getting more and more like a range rover
All made by the same people
If you want a less biased answer follow this link
ps just looked at the US website and for our american friends for freelander read LR2 and for discovery read LR3. It seems they don't even bother selling the proper land rover - the Defender, in the US

The Range Rover is made for good streets
AND outdoor activities... this means it is fast
and save also on a highway.
The Land Rover is just an outdoor car,
a jungle car and not so well for usual streets.
That's all. The same goes for the UNIMOG
on Mercedes Benz base. With that car You are
the King Of The Woods... but You should not drive
through the urban part of our beautiful world....
Amen.

Land Rovers more rough and ready, better at off-road but not so luxurious as a Range rover. Perfect example, the Defender is a Land Rover, its designed to be great off-road and sod the on-road bit!! Exactly what an Off-Roader SHOULD be!!
