That can't be true. The world would be a much prettier place if that were the case. LOL!

More prevalent than what? Ok, homosexuality occurs in nature on a regular basis. (consider the research on homosexual seagulls done not so long ago.) Human beings are sexual in nature.

You question does bring up a theory I have been mulling over for some time now. There is great debate over choosing to be gay or being born that way. The old nurture or nature argument.

What if...

Consider for a moment the evidence that show evolution of a species. It is usually in reference to the survival of the fittest etc.. but what about the over-population the world currently is suffering from? What if homosexuals are increasing in reality not just in visability? Could this be an evolutionary adjustment to the overpopulation problem? Confounded of course by the heterosexual knee-jerk, right-wing, fundamentalists?

Considering not all gays feel a need to breed, there really is very little to be concerned about them multiplying and taking over society, which makes their precieved threat by the fundies less convincing and more laughable.

If indeed there is something of a higher meaning to being gay, such as an answer to curtail the population growth so that the planet can support everyone, then we will see more and more gays as the right wing tries to stifle the progress of the balancing act being attempted by nature.

(visualizing here the maniacle laughter and hand wringing as some of my more radical sisters and brothers chortle and start to scream.. "we will take over the world..muuuahahahahahahahaha..)

In my experience, many homosexuals don't understand bisexuals, and many heterosexuals do not understand homosexuals, etc, its basically this misunderstanding cycle. I personally agree with the sexuality scale. Where for example 0 = totally gay, 10 = totally heterosexual. Most people supposedly fall somewhere in the middle.

But basically homosexuality is not more prevalent, it is just talked about more often today.

Online, people aren't shy about being homosexual. In real life, however, it's a new fad to persecute anyone who's suspected of being gay or openly gay. The U.S. is turning more into Nazi Germany every single day. I asked someone why they make fun of gays at my school (A Catholic school) and they accused me of being gay. All they said was "All right, so you're gay?". And also my parents joke about it (They're Methodists, who tend to be more accepting, but they say, "Well, at the bus stop I saw some boys and girls holding hands and a boy and a boy").
Basically I've never heard anyone coming out and saying it since it's really not anyone's business unless people get in their face like they do.
Some bigots these days...

There are obviously more homosexuals than there are admitted homosexuals. Estimates have up to 10% of the population as being homosexual, yet only about 1-2% are open about it.

More prevalent than what?

More prevalent than in the past?

More prevalent than it appears to be?

More prevalent than heterosexuality?

More prevalent than pine trees?

Most people are taking your question to mean "now, than in the past", but your detail suggests you mean "than it appears."

Clear good; vague bad.

[end of rant]

There are still people who hide their homosexuality. But fewer and fewer all the time.

I've heard that the often cited 10% is bogus, and it's really less than that.

I've also heard it's increasing due to environmental factors.

It seems like it is because of two reasons i can think of.

1. it is significantly more socially-acceptable to be gay nowadays. there are still a lot of hate crimes committed against homosexuals, but in general more people are open to it now. people in the closet feel less threatened to come out.

2. increased awareness brought about by reasons in the first answer and vice versa also create the illusion that there are more homosexuals in the world. this increased awareness might also bring people to think about their sexual orientation and discover that they can be gay, bi or whatever. also, there are more people in the world now. statistically speaking there might be be more homosexuals because there are more people.

Your questions assumes that homosexuality is not a choice. Check out www.narth.com
This is a non-religious website claiming that scientific evidence shows that homosexuality is not genetic.
So, I would say no to your question. There are exactly as many homosexuals as have chosen to be so.

I don't believe it's more prevalent now than in the past. I think people are just more comfortable about being who they are now, and not hiding it.

I think there are alot more people (young teens) coming out. I was shocked to learn how many gays and lesbians and in the school system. I'm not against it ,but I'm not for it. Whatever you prefer you prefer. You would be very suprised at the fact that the straightest looking girl or boy is a gay or lesbian.

no, just more open. If you also look at the sources of information and the speed in which you get it...C'mon if this had been the 50's we may still not know about Steve Irwin's death.... now if someone famous passes gas we know about it 5 minutes after it happened. same thing with any sensational type news story and gay's=sensationalistic story.
