I'm a recent law graduate (but not in the top of my class) and am taking the bar in February. However, I can't seem to find a job as a law clerk anywhere! Everyone wants an experienced paralegal or a licensed attorney. What's worse, I've tried getting non-law-related jobs through temp agencies and am getting too many turn-downs for the decent jobs because I'm "overly-qualified." Also, the same agencies won't place me in a clerking position because I haven't worked in a law office before. Is there any way out of this horrible predicament?

Oh, been there. Or, close to there! I graduated with a BS in paralegal studies, and no law firm would hire me without experience. I did finally find one, but had to take a major cut in pay because I didn't have experience. Hang in there, and you WILL find your professional home! Good Luck!

Yeah, should have had better grades...

Seriously, do you live in a large city? Go through the telephone book and send your resume with a cover letter to 50 or so law firms. Let them know what you are doing and where your interest lies.

Most attorneys do not mind having someone around the office to do work that they themselves either cannot bill or cannot afford to bill.

now that the summer law clerks have gone back to law school, aren't there more positions available? What about volunteering to help out at legal aid or some other law-related organization in order to make contacts and get yourself known to people who can tell you about openings they hear of.

You need to network. Get out and join clubs like Toastmasters, Rotary, The Masons and get to know more people. Volunteer at places where lawyers will be. Use the contacts you make to get introductions to possible employers or people who know them. Use all the contacts you have including family and friends. That you haven't come in the top of your class is only a temporary impediment. Good luck.

Remember these words in an interview

"I am willing to make a scarifice"

when they say you are over qualified.

Also a degree is not a guarentee of a job, might need to change your attitude a little, we all put or pants on 1 leg at a time, well unless you jump into them, but that's another story.
