Strangers don't have any reason to lie to you, unless they are just liars by nature. People who know you probably care about your feelings and won't always tell the absolute truth. Also, a forum like yahoo answers allows you to ask anything, no matter how weird or stupid, to strangers with complete anonymity. Ask your friends and family those same questions and it could make the relationship awkward. But if ask questions about yourself to strangers, you have to accept that most of them won't know what the hell their talking about.

In my opinion, having done more than a little study in Psychology, the desire to hear about ones self from strangers may be the result of a general lack of self esteem or certainty of understanding the self person. Usually these type persons are willing to hear both good and bad information from strangers because the stranger does not represent a source of embarrassment having no relationship to the general life situation. These persons are also quick to take offense when virtually the same identical information is brought to their attention by those persons in the family or friendship circle and will go to extraordinary ends to force the other person to change that opinion or information. This character trait is also one of the primary reasons that Blackmailers are able to victimize these persons, simply due to the desire that their character or deeds should not be revealed to others. Secret information also tends to feed the self ego, particularly if such information gratifies an inflation of the ego. Sincerely

Because most people are so worried about what other people think of them & they can't go on if they aren't sure about how they appear to someone that doesn't actually have any real affect on their life. It's sad really. They have to keep chasing empty opinions of themselves to feel like somebody.
I sure am glad I don't worry about what people thought of me! It's so easy just being yourself instead of faking who you are to get a strangers approval. Wonder if they have multiple fake personalities? Scary huh

Since this is in the Psychology area, I take it you are talking about doctors and not psychics..
If you are talking about the first, then, that's not what happens.. the patient/client/whatever you call them, tells the doc about things in their past, and where they are today, and, with the insight provided by their natural instincts, as well as the education they have received, docs then are able to assist the speaker in gaining insights into themselves that will help them improve their lives.
