A short-tailed bull ray, Dasyatis brevicaudata, as near as I can tell from the descriptions and location. Ray venom is very painful, but very rarely fatal, and then to folks that have severe anaphylactic reactions in general. This was a very large ray with a very long spine (up to nearly 15" long in this species) and it just happened to strike up under the ribs into the heart. They are not aggressive and only lash out when severely threatened or trapped, such as when grabbed, stepped on or cornered. This one apparently felt trapped with him right above and the cameraman in front, according to the reports.

The only reason why the sting ray was deadly was beause it stabbed him in the heart.

Otherwise, sting rays are harmless. Even their stingers aren't very deadly.

It was the physical damage to his heart, not the poison, that killed him. A sting ray's poison is only deadly to small organisms.

it was a bullray stingray, The footage of his death will never be released to public, Nor should people have even expected it would be, It is going to be destroyed, by the request of the family, From a press release according to Steve's manager Joe Stainton.. They're having a private funeral, So there is no way in hell any of that tape 10 days prior to his death is even getting out..!
