Once upon a time, there were four people;

Their names were Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody.

Whenever there was an important job to be done, Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

When Nobody did it, Everybody got angry because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Somebody would do it, but Nobody realized that Nobody would do it.

So consequently Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done in the first place.

To do something takes a lot of consideration for the best result for the effort that will need to be expended. As the Government is appointed by the electorate to do the job correctly, and for just the bits to be changed for a minority part of a manifesto or group within a country can take an amazing amount of money as well as effort on the part of an individual / group and with a possibility of failure most are put off before they try.
There is a stigma about failure for some reason, but it is better to try and fail than not try at all.

I am doing something.

When 9/11 occurred I decided to stay in Industrial Security so that I could be part of the solution to protect the United States. However, over the years I have found out that all the talk about improving security is just “talk” the company, and the clients, I work for is just as amateurish and dysfunctional now as they were before 9/11.

I contacted the Democratic Party at the local and the national level with a proposition of my running for office locally. That was on July 13, 2006. To date, I have heard nothing from them. I can only speculate as to why they have ignored my offer.

See: http://www.cliffpotts.org and http://www.snapshot.cliffpotts.org.

I have over the last three years written three book on what is happening here in the US. One is called “Well Past Midnight;” and is about being underemployed in the Bush Economy. It is written in rhyme. I would not call it poetry, but it is a collection of lyrics on what life is like for the working poor in the US today. The other is a serious discussion of alternative religion in opposition to the Religious Right. It is called “SpiritFlight.” I paid $1,000.00 to have it professionally edited for public discussion. Remember, I work as a Security Officer, that cost me over 100 hours of my work just to present an alternative view to the public, and there are no guarantees that it will ever be distributed, or that I will ever get my investment back. It is not mainstream, so it will be self-published and it is likely that it will never get the distribution it deserves. The third work, “Theocon Nation” (also self published) was pulled because it kept coming off as prejudiced against the Christians, and that was not its point. It may be rewritten or reedited but it has a limited life. You can see the work at http://www.lulu.com/cliffpotts.

I am currently working on a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice with an eventual focus on International Crime (which includes Terrorism), with the goal of, still, becoming involved in protecting the nation. I am 48. I am not about to go into the military. My son just finished at the Navy RTC and is in “A” in Florida. That is what he is doing. In part it is because the economy is so bad; in part it is to serve the country in this time of need.

Also, I moderate three Yahoo Groups that discuss and track issues in the US.
See:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SurdelafronteradelosEEUU/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spiritflight/

Atop all of this, I have a quarterly newsletter that keeps tabs on issues.

That is what I am doing.

While it is true that many people feel rather apathetic about the government, I think that many just cannot find a good way to do something outside of voting. Many people, at one time or another, think about "What would I do if I were President?" but find no real way to apply that to the actual system.

Even though I'm in college, I write letters and petitions on almost a daily basis and plan on doing much more when I graduate.

Good topic.

That's a good point.

People like to have a good moan. Myself included. I don't anything about things though because I know that even though people would turn around and say they agree with me and support me, when it came to taking the bullet people would not do anything. They'd turn round and look the other way.
I think other people think that way too, nobody wants to get singled out and feel the wrath of whoever (employers, government etc).
Politics is a very twisted business. People are bullied into submission. Well they are in my opinion anyway. Even though we have rights, justice never seems to get done. Not in ol' England anyway.

Because opinions don't really matter unless you get paid for them in this country. Unfortunately most of the power of the public is constricted by the vote and a lack of wealth to fund a PR campaign for any particular political issue. Also it is practically impossible to unseat those in power if the system is set up to have one group of powerful people be supported by another group of powerful people because their incomes depend on each-other. (i.e. Lawyers support accountants by requiring accountants to do some types of work, and accountants support lawyers by withholding their opinions unless the lawyers perform some work to give an opinion.)

However, I think arguing on this site is constructive, but the effects are limited. If you can ask a question in a way that makes someone have to think about the answer in a manner that they have never thought before, then it is possible that you are opening someones mind. Those people have to be willing participants and not just morons spewing crap about people who they oppose.

You are right, about many of us. People get lackadaisical when things are going okay- in a way, we just get too comfortable. It works out fine for the people in power. But many Americans are beginning to see the big picture, and we want our leaders to be accountable. The only way is to quit whining and get involved. It is difficult for many of us who work most of the time, and scarcely have enough time to devote to our families, but we absolutely must care enough about the future of our children to get involved in some way. We may be heading for a revolution if enough of us wise up.

I do what I can. I try to promote tolerance to people of other beliefs and cultures, in my own life and in my family. I VOTE - and that is something you need to do when you are old enough. I try to buy fair trade products wherever I can. And in other small ways I do what I feel I need to do to make my voice heard. It may not seem much. But we can't all go out on demonstrations, some of us have other responsibilities.

I've protested the ACLU, circulated petitions for school privatization, and donated literally thousands of dollars in the last 2 years to further the programs and organizations which most aptly fit my political philosophy.
