This phenomenon crosses all boundries- old spinsters, gay couples, young selfish women, lonely men. It's unreal. People treat their pets like children: clothes, hats, spas, daycare, totes and carriers, hotels, (no joke), language, motivation, summer camps! The dog has become a replacement for a child especially among young selfish types who don't want the sacrifices that a child demands. Yet, they talk about their pet, carry photos of their pet as if it were their spawn. Then you have all the celebrity bimbos with their freakish miniture dogs stuffed in thousand dollar handbags. This society has reached terrifying decadence. I'm not religious, I hate religion, but the culture of death is present in this trend. Is there a psychological explanation for this?

I should add that I don't want these people to have kids, sorry if I was confusing. These types shouldn't act as though the dog is a kid. I know we bred them down to toys, but in the end they are a capably independent animal.
A friend of mine carries a stack of photos of him and his dog's abventure trips. The dog even has a rucksack and tent! Another friend (a couple) has to get a babysitter for the dog because it spazzes (and he gets guilt) when the dog is alone. I've just had it and started telling them that they're kooks!

I had a friend once that you just described perfectly. She bought her dog Christmas presents from Santa, dressed him for Halloween, put him in diapers and bought him freshly sliced turkey & ham from the deli while she ate cheap, no-name sandwich meats. I understand that people adore their pets but this dog's life was better than most people I know.
Then, the baby came & the dog became the babysitter. No joke! My sister saw the girl in the drug store one day & asked about the baby (about 6mos old at the time). The girl said that the baby was fine & was in the car with the dog. My sister thought she may be joking but when she left the store, found out the baby was alone in the car-with the dog babysitting!

This is so true. I know a gay couple that has a pair of dogs and it's embarrassing the way they fawn over their pets. They're large dogs and one of them likes attention ALL the time and when we're over there playing a board game or whatever, the dog's tail knocks everything over and disrupts everything. They have a huge yard they can put the dogs in but they never do it when it's necessary because "the puppies feel lonely outside when there's company."
I was terrified when they mentioned they wanted to adopt a kid. I mean, I'm not against gay adoptions, but geez, that kid's gonna be one annoying spoiled brat.

WELL, if they're so selfish that they "don't want [to make] the sacrifices that a child demands," then it's probably a good thing that these people have dogs instead of kids. What kind of parents would they make if they don't want kids? Besides, it's not like we're about to die out as a species and we need people to procreate to keep the world populated.
I figure, if it makes these people happy, then they should do it. I know people who are like this, though I'm not personally, and if these dogs are what makes them happy, why would I want to take away that happiness by belittling it? There are enough unhappy people in this world already.

I have two large dogs and often would rather spend time with them than people sometimes. Sure I spoil them, however, I don't take it too far. I guess people treat them like children because they sure are a lot easier to take care of than children. Ask yourself this, should someone that really treats an animal like you describe have a human kid?

My response to this is who does it hurt? Certainly not you.And I do not see these people as being selfish or anything even close to that. The worst thing I can think of is eccentric. The fact of the matter is that at least they are connecting with something alive and real and are making some connection outside of themselves. And if that makes them feel better about themselves or feel less lonely or makes them healthier in some way then the world is a better place. There is a good chance that these people are healthier mentally than so called normal people like yourself.

Children are starving in every major metropolis of this world, sleeping in the streets, submitted to abuse and explotation, while in many places, rich people that can't have children prefer to pay thousands to a doctor to have an artificially-inseminated kid, rather than adopt, for free, one of this poor human beings in need of a family and a proper way of life.
The pets of the rich are better-fed than the children of the poor.
Welcome to our "free"-market, selfish, unfair, egocentric capitalist society, where a hard-working doctor has to struggle to make ends meet while a rich CEO that has inherited his corporation from daddy can spend his days jacking off in a Houston office while earning millions.

I don't know about scary, but I do think it's sad. People just aren't connecting with each other like they used to. People are lonely, and a pet will never betray you or break your heart. Really sad.

Yeah...animals are a hell of a lot better to be around than people! Why should I have human kids just so I can screw them up and cause more problems for society, when I can have my dogs and cats who make me very, very happy and I can provide a loving pampered home for them?? At least my pets won't turn out to be serial killers or republicans or something. I love my animals more than anything!! I do not put clothes on them, however. Except at Halloween, they have to dress up for at least a minute.
There are a LOT of people who really should NOT have human kids but do...but then again, most of them shouldn't have pets either.

My monther in law is like this. She is a slave to the dogs. They have to be hand fed or they won't eat, they have to go to the vets every month for nail trimming since they will not allow her to do it,she dresses them up in weird clothes, and always has to be home every three hours so they do not have to stress their bladders!!!!
WACKO!!!
And hearing her talk to them in the littel cute voice would make you HURL!!
