Animal Crackers: The National Biscuit Comapany introduced Barnums Animal Crackers in 1902 as a seasonal promotion. The carrying string on the box was designed for hanging on a Christmas tree at a time when candy and treats were typical Christmas tree decorations. Shirley Temple later celebrated the snack with the song, “Animal Crackers in My Soup.”
