There have been 3 USS Maine build: the first 2 were battleship, and the last one a nuclear submarine:
• USS Maine (1895-1898), originally designated as Armored Cruiser # 1: USS Maine, a 6682-ton second-class battleship, was built at the New York Navy Yard and commissioned in September 1895. Her active career was spent operating along the U.S. east coast and in the Caribbean area. In January 1898, Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba, to protect U.S. interests during a time of local insurrection and civil disturbances. Three weeks later, on 15 February, the battleship was sunk by a massive explosion that killed the great majority of her crew.

• USS Maine (Battleship # 10, later BB-10), 1902-1922 :USS Maine, first of a class of three 12,500-ton battleships, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Commissioned in late December 1902, she was in the Atlantic for the next five years. USS Maine was decommissioned in mid-May 1920. A few months later, when the U.S. Navy formally adopted the hull number system for its ships, she was classified as BB-10. The ship saw no further commissioned service and was sold for scrapping in January 1922.

USS MAINE was an old style warship sitting in Havana Harbor. It's engines ran on coal and where you have coal, you have coal dust. And like grain dust in farm silos, it can ignite and cause a massive explosion. The USS Maine had such an explosion. Due to the USA wanting to have an empire (Manifest Destiny) people such as William Randolph Hearst claimed it was blown up with a mine, getting the USA into the Spanish American War, where the USA ended up with the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico and a bunch of other little colonies. (We also stole Hawaii from the Hawaiians.)
