How would you help when you have a family and it's affecting your relationship. Or should I let him hit rock bottom and just leave?

Unfortunately, you can't help an alcoholic! He/She has to help themselves. They must hit rock bottom, before they'll realize they need help....Sometimes this takes and long time and sometimes they reach it quickly.
Save yourself and your children if you have any. Either join Al-Anon and Al-Ateen, or get out!

First you have to make sure that the person wants help. There are many groups that exist for the alcoholic as well as the families affected by the alcohol. Take time out to do an AA search around your town. But remember, you have to make sure that the person wants to be helped.

You could try to go to Al-Anon for yourself, to learn how to live with an alcoholic better. Sometimes this helps relationships, and honestly sometimes it kills them I believe. This program is not for the drunk but for the family and friends of the person who are involved in his life. You will probably get lots of helpful advice and hopefully learn to live a little happier. the only thing you can do is talk to them , tell them you'll be there for them if they get in house treatment [rehab center] and if they fight you over this start making plans to get away from them because it will only make it worst to stay with them and let them contually abuse you [mentally or personlly] and alcohol
