It's my first homework assignment at school. I need to gather up as many different responses as possible from all backgrounds and cultures. Thanks in advance!

This is helping a lot. My assignment is only 1 1/2 pages double-space. As I read these answers, could you write a little bit about your background (in debt, have kids, etc). I think that's really where my teacher is headed with this. But I'll know more when I have all the answers. And I guess there's no right answer but we'll see.

$1 Million nowadays does not get as much as 10 years ago. However, if I had $1M (minus 1/3 after taxes) this is what I would do...

Donate 1/3 to my favorite charities (Wildlife Warriors, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Doctors Without Borders)

Distribute 1/3 among my family.

Take the last 1/3 to pay off my debts (student loans, mortgate, etc.) and buy a hybrid car (or E85).

I'm a 35 yr old female doctor from the mid-western US. I would pay bills with some of the money, give some to family and friends, and invest the rest.
I don't think 1 million is enough to live on. I think it would take about 10 million to pay your expenses for the rest of your life. Keep in mind that health care can get very expensive as you get older. The nicer nursing homes can cost a LOT of money to live in.
I'm single, no kids. My medical school loans cost me 180,000 and that's not counting interest.

Pay off my current bills and buy a home. Not an extravagant one, but a nice one with acerage. Then I would invest the rest. Save it for my kids college fund and my retirement. Put it in the bank and live off the interest, and I would continue to work. Not becuause I needed to but becuase I want to. I would not blow it on cars, boats or trips. I would invest in real estate and try not to loose it all.

Pay off all my bills, give some money to my three kids, donate some money to the homeless shelters, and then take an early retirement to some place where it's mostly hot and has beaches.

Refer to what Lawrence told Peter he would do if he had a million dollars in the movie, "Office Space". That, too, is my answer.
