There is a possibility you could have at least partial tear of the achilles tendon. This is frequently accomplanied by a audible "pop." Often times, the sufferer will look around to see if something "hit them in the leg" as this is often what it is described by the patient. Pain and swelling along the back of the lower part of the leg is the usual site of pain. There is usually weakness of the muscles that attach to this tendon which would be demonstrated by that inability or great difficulty raising up on your toes or using the gas pedal on a car.
If the pain is higher up, more muscle as opposed to tendon may be involved. If it is just a bad strain, it should start to feel significanly better in a few days. Especially with use of frequent cold packs.
To determine if it is an achilles tendon tear, you will proabably need to see an orthopedist and have an MRI. An x-ray will not demonstrate a muscular or tendonous rupture.

If the calf is extremely tender, you have probably torn your the gastrocnemius muscle in the calf. This injury is extremely painful. Anti-inflammatory pain killers, rest and ice will help.
If you think you have damaged your achilles tendon, there is a simple test you can perform. Stand facing a chair, rest the knee of the affected leg on the chair, gently squeeze your calf muscle, if this action causes your heel to move upwards towards your knee- this indicates that the achilles tendon itself is not ruptured.

I agree with what cdpgdt said. Also if you have torn a muscle or ligament it will take longer to heal then a broken bone because you can not isolate it. Ice it while it is swollen and then heat off and on about every 20 - 30 minutes for about 10 minutes. Advil will help with the pain but you really need to go see a doctor asap. Good Luck You can also soak in a hot tub with a lot of Epson salt in it as long as your not diabetic.

Maybe you pushed too much weight than your calf muscle or tendon can handle. There may be tears in your calf muscle or tendon that need at least three days to heal. I had similar experience before, and I suggest that you do RICE threatment as soon as possible. In addition, eating food high in protein (ex. meat stew) will speed up the healing of your muscle or tendon.

You need to go to the ER. Get an x-ray if it is suggested. Rub some muscle pain ointment on it, like Aspercreme. Next time you lift weights, kekep your knees up. That will protect your low back and legs. Tendons are attached to muscles I believe.
