Hi all. I got a job today at a "mom n' pop" type warehouse, where I have been given the title "Picker/Packer." Now, the owner, Chuck, stated that I will be given an hourly rate of $4. Is that minimum wage? Also, I will be required to make deliveries in my truck, and when I asked about gas mileage reimbursement, he stated "after 90 days." Well, I don't have my GED, and I just got fired from McDonald's for putting my own spin on the drinks and burgers (i.e. Ketchup on the Big Macs). Well, I think I can do the job, but Chuck's wife Dottie Lee, smacked me on my buttocks really hard, and laughed. I was so mad! Should I just take it and hope it gets better? What if Dottie Lee becomes more aggressive and grabs my manmeat? How can I get mileage reimbursement? Gas is expensive! What is minimum wage? $4 doesn't sound like a lot of money!

Dude take it. It sounds like your not smart enough to hold down a real job and this slave labor deal sounds like the real deal. Your best shot is to get Dottie Lee to give you a couple hundred extra cash on the side for "favors".

Actually, if by picker/packer, you are talking about a produce (I.e. a farm) employer, then the rest of the answers here are incorrect, sorry guys. If you are considered a farm hand, the minimum wage is well below that of most jobs, such as mcdonalds, burger king...etc. It can be as low as $3.25 such as it is in Michigan. This is mainly due to the fact that most farmhands are seasonal workers, most coming from other countries, who migrate back and forth and are not considered eligable for standard US minimum wage. See the attached source to look up your states minimum wage.

As to smacking you on the butt, perhaps you should take the job and then sue them for sexual harrassment, it will get you a lot more money :P

Minimum wage can be different in different states, but NO $4 is NOT much money, and I am not sure it is minimum wage, but it doens't sound like it.

I would NOT take this job if i were you. It sounds like you have not been shown an employee handbook, or the rules and regs on what benefits you will receive and when. 90 days is pretty standard for labor jobs, and I doubt you will last that long.

No one has a right to touch you in the workplace. That is called harassment. I would RUN from this job...

Go back to McD's or something and FOLLOW THEIR WORK INSTRUCTIONS to the T. They have a standard they conform to, and you don't get to change it just to be creative. If not, just keep looking. This job sounds like a bad idea from the start.

If it is your only choice, maybe, but this sounds really questionable...

- He is paying less than minimum, which makes me think he is paying you 'under the table'. That means that you are not getting any social security, you won't have any legal rights as an employee, and you won't get overtime.

- If he is paying under the table, I wonder if you would be covered by Workman's Comp if you are injured.

- He should be paying for your gas at least. I have a distant relative who got a similar delivery job, where he had to pay for his own gas. All of his salary when into his gas tank. Consider that every time you fill your tank it will cost you a day's salary.

No 4$ is not min wage, I believe its 5.25 an hour and no i wouldn't use my truck without being paid mileage that's not right at all. And it really doesn't matter about your education there are better paying jobs out there. I would tell Dottie lee to cool it or your gonna report her.

Federal law says minimum wage right now is $5.65 per hour. They are screwing you, my friend, plain and simple. And don't bet on getting reimbursed for mileage -- that crap about 90 days is a load of hogwash. Again, under Federal law, you're entitled to 44.5 cents per mile if you drive your own personal vehicle for business. You'd be better off working at any fast food joint or even as a stocker or cashier at a supermarket or Wal-Mart or something like that. My advice to you is find another job.

Minimum wage varies from state to state. Contact your state representative or senator to find out what it is. I would look for some other job- these people sound like hicks. Scary!!!!!

Good luck on the hunt!

Dude. The national minimum wage is 5.85. $4 is illegal. Get out of there, report those slave-drivers, and find yourself another job.

Sounds like they are ripping you off, I would leave, but not yet. Keep the job so you have SOME money, and look around for another job when you are not working.
