Thats life im afraid! Thinking that people with Downs are 'think' is a common misconception, many have learning difficulties but no more than that.Tons of parents think this when they have a baby with any kind of disability, untill that is, they learn to see past the disability and see the beautiful child they have given birth too.
But i think it is brill that a soap finally has someone with a disability in it, it will broaden peoples minds and open their eyes to whats around them.

It was all done in the name of drama. I think what she said was a bit harsh but it is just a soap at the end of the day and its nothing to get upset about. It is obviously a sensitive issue which is why there was a helpline advert at the end of the episode.
Some people just cannot cope with the idea of having a child with special needs. I've worked with special needs children and find that even though their needs are more complex, deep down they are no different then the lucky children.

I think that is how some people would react to be honest it is probably the shock talking, a percentage of new mums don't take to their children after the birth and I am talking about mothers of children without any kind of disability. i suffered from post natal depression.
I think it is good that soaps take on conventional story lines once in a while to open peoples mind to conditions like Downes Syndrome, etc and it seems to do the trick because we are discussing it now

I watched Eastender's tonight and bearing in mind that it is only a soap, I thought they played the situation really well. Honey is portrayed as a bit dim anyway, but she has had an enormous shock and it would be quite possible that she would have the knee jerk reaction that she is portraying. Give it a few days and she will see the light and fall in love with her daughter all over again.

It's about time this kind of issue was dealt with on the soaps. If you'd seen the news this morning you would have seen the father of a Downes Syndrom child who the makers of Eastenders got their info from.
Too many people know nothing or are afraid of anyone who is different, this could be a great opportunity to dispel some of this fear.
Lets hope they use it wisely.

Yes, it is really prejudiced, but it's shocking to hear for a parent - especially one who specifically wished for brains for her baby, and for her to be a doctor/lawyer/judge.
Also, she is a hormonal first-time mother. It's not as if she has decided that she wants to give her up for adoption or anything.
And it's EastEnders as well. I wouldn't be shocked at it being un-PC. Just look at the message the storyline about Sonia's homosexuality gave out! It suggested that:
1) there are hardly any gay people around, and so everyone treats you as a freak;
2) your relationships with family and friends break down, including losing access to your daughter;
3) it leads to such problems as alcoholism and suspension from college;
4) gay relationships don't last long anyway and you go back to being straight in the end...
Need I continue?

I think that her reaction was the to do with the shock of discovering that her baby has downes. I would imagine that it would come as a shock and your emotions would be all over the place. It sounded awful I know, but I've known women who have felt that way about their baby when their baby has been completely healthy, but it doesn't usually last. You can never predict these things, emotions are not always rational.

why??? thats all i have to say!!!!! why can nothing good ever happen to anyone on that god frosaken square? althought honey did react quite badly to the news, imagine having something inside of you for nine months and having all these expectations and then for something to turn out not quite as you'd plan must hurt quite a lot. But i agree, it's great they finally broached the subject

Well I guess it is a topic which needs to be addressed in soap world .... but in this case, I find it a little disappointing , just for once it would be nice if someone lived happily ever after - there always has to be some sort of misfortune :(

Unless you have been in that situation you have no idea how anyone would react. That would be a normal first reaction, it won't and doesn't last.
