First check underneath and if fabric is still covering bottom cut open and see if anything, like a dead mouse or your lost tuna and swiss on rye has ended up down there. Then, purchase a large box of baking soda and liberaly scatter it all over the couch! Under the cushions, over the entire surface and cover it with any kind of cover. (Like a clean sheet) leave it that way and continue to use it. After a few days remove the cover and vaccum the couch. This should remove the odor and leave none of its own behind. You could leave some fresh baking soda under the cushions for extra help. Also works for carpet odor and is lots cheaper than the sented carpet fresh which is the same thing. I used this method to remove odor fron a chest freezer which smelled of mothballs. (Don't ask)

Spot Shot - I bought at costco. Supposed to be for carpet, but it PULLS the smell out of things. I use it on our couches, carpets, and beds.
I used it on my mattress after my son peed on it & it completely pulled the smell out. Make sure you open the windows though because the funky smell that was in the couch will go in the air & be even stronger. I had to air my room for a full day & 1/2 before the pee smell left the air.

If from a basement its mold. Try the cleaning, but take out side in the sun for a day or two. If you can turn upside down for one of the days outside. Sun light and dry air will clear up.

Try sprinkling under the cushions, and in all of the crevices, with baking soda. Leave it for a day or so, then vacuum. That is a very inexpensive way to remove odors, and it often works.

I always use Lysol. You can get a black lamp and if it lights up then it is animal/human pee. In that case you use an anti-bacterial like Lysol and vinegar to remove the smell. You can also use a product on the market to remove pee.

wow These answers arent very helpful...
Get an enzyme treatment done, you can call a carpet cleaning place, usually like $100 though, They might sell something like this somewhere, Home Dept or a place where they sell steam cleaner products,I dont know,,,
Also use a bacteria cleaner like Lysol or something, fabreeze will just mask the smell....
Good Luck !

How about removing the cushion covers and having them cleaned? It also might help to leave it outside for a day or two and let it air out.
